Vikings go 5 - 1 in District Duals

Woodbridge hosted the District Duals on Friday and Saturday. They won all three of their matches Friday evening defeating Hylton by a score of 43 - 24, squeaking by Osbourn Park 33 - 32 and defeating Potomac by a score of 62 - 15. Going undefeated on the day were Deandre Rodriguez, Greg Nelson, Nolan King, Cody Zeman, Anthony Blocker, Trey Purnell and Evan Greenleaf. Greg Nelson won a close match over two time state placer Eric Dromazos of Osbourn Park. On Saturday the Vikings defeated Gar-Field by a score of 42 - 30 before losing to Forest Park by a score of 54 - 22. They ended the day by shutting out Freedom. Freedom only had one wrestler on Saturday and Trey Purnell pinned him to complete the shutout. Going undefeated for the two days were Greg Nelson, Anthony Blocker and Trey Purnell. The Vikings will travel to Cosby High School in the Richmond area next week for a dual tournament to complete their schedule prior to the District Tournament on February 6th.
Vikings suffer disappointing loss on Senior Night

Woodbridge wrestled Fairfax High School in a dual meet on Wednesday, January 13th for senior night. Max Rigtrup, Tyler Javonillo and Anthony Blocker were honored as they near the end of their high school wrestling careers. The match had a disappointing end with a 47 - 29 loss in a match-up in which both teams were missing a number of their starters due to injury. Winning matches for the Vikings were Trey Purnell, Evan Greenleaf, Greg Nelson and Anthony Blocker all by pin and Deandre Rodriguez by technical fall.
Vikings win close game

With 4.8 seconds left in its Cardinal District contest at Woodbridge Tuesday, the Gar-Field boys basketball team prepared to inbound the ball at its offensive end trailing by a point. The Indians had a play set up to get the ball to its top player, senior Jeremiah Johnson. But as was the case for much of the night, the Woodbridge defense did not cooperate. The Vikings deflected the inbounds pass to Johnson and Darius Smith flung it to the far end of the court as time expired to give host Woodbridge a hard-fought 38-37 victory.
Rodriguez, Blocker and Greenleaf Win Patriot Classic

The Vikings participated in the Patriot Classic wrestling tournament at Northern High School in Owings, MD. on January 8 - 9, 2010. Traveling with just ten wrestlers due to some nagging injuries, the Vikings still managed to place fourth out of 20 teams in the tournament. Deandre Rodriguez pulled off the biggest upset of the tournament with a 5-4 victory in the final over Annandale's Jon Le. Wrestling from the 6th seed position, Deandre defeated the 3rd, 2nd and 1st seeds in order. Anthony Blocker won a close 5 -3 match against Annandale's Stacey Anderson to win the 171 pound title. Evan Greenleaf pinned Danny Lee of Walt Whitman in 43 seconds to win the 215 pound title. Evan now has 21 victories for the season - all by pin! Greg Nelson was runner-up in perhaps the toughest weight division in the tournament, losing in the finals to Maryland state placer and now four time Patriot Classic Champion, Quentin Leadbeter. Also placing for the Vikings were Cody Zeman at 160 (4th), Trey Purnell at 189 (5th) and Tyler Javonillo at 135 (6th).
Vikings put Seven in the Semifinals at Patriot Classic

The Vikings are participating in the Patriot Classic wrestling tournament at Northern High School in Owings, MD. this weekend. Traveling with just ten wrestlers due to some nagging injuries, the Vikings still managed to put 7 wrestlers in the semifinals. Deandre Rodriguez (119), Greg Nelson (125), Tyler Javonillo (135), Cody Zeman (160), Anthony Blocker (171), Trey Purnell (189) and Evan Greenleaf (215) are all in the semifinal round on Saturday. The other three wrestlers making the trip (Matt Chickering (103), Billy Wilder (112) and Christian Argueta (130)) are all still alive in the consolation rounds. The Championship semi-finals and first round consolations will begin at 10 AM on Saturday morning followed by the second round consolations, Consolation quarterfinals and consolation semifinals in order. The finals, consolation finals and 5th/6th place matches will begin at 6 PM on Saturday.
Potomac boys outlast Woodbridge in foul fest

On Tuesday the Potomac boys basketball team arrived at Woodbridge High School expecting a tough battle between the only two squads with unbeaten Cardinal District records. Neither club knew just how much of a battle it would be. The Panthers and Vikings saw five players foul out and 38 combined violations called with 59 free throws attempted between the teams as Potomac outlasted Woodbridge 71-58.
